Viva Chile y Olympic Gold!!!

Chilean Gold

Chilean BarbieSince I'm not much of a sports fan, I haven't been following the Olympics. The only reason that I watched the Opening Ceremonies was to see Bjork, and Bob Costas ruined that moment for me. How dare he talk over her performance? I doubt that he'd do that to an American singer. Because I am half-Chilean, I also watched the Opening Ceremonies to catch a glimpse of the Chilean Olympic team. The Chilean flagbearer looked just like my Chilean Barbie doll!

According to NBCOlympics.com, Chile was not expected to win any medals this year. How do you gauge a country's chances at winning a medal? Whatever. Before these Olympics, Chile had never won a gold medal. My sister called me today and let me know that a Chilean defeated an American (ha!) in Men's Single tennis, and the Chilean team won gold in the Men's Double competition. Nicolas Massu along with teammate Fernando Gonzalez won Chile's first gold medal EVER in the doubles match, while Massu won the second gold medal in the single's competition when he beat Mardy Fish, who ended up crying after his defeat.

I love it when a little country manages to beat the US in Olympic competitions. Don't get me wrong, I love being American. But sometimes American sports coverage is overbearingly American-centric.
