580 California Street Specters

One night about 7 or 8 years ago, I was walking up Kearny Street with some friends, and we found some wraith-like statues at the top of a downtown highrise. They just seemed very out of place and odd. I forgot about the statues until one day Ray and I spotted the statues while driving around. We were in a hurry so we didn't have time to take a closer look.
Today Ray and I had some time on our hands after lunch so we decided to look for the statues and find out more about them. We managed to find them at 580 Calfornia Street at Kearny.
Because I had imagined that they had some sort of old, sinister history behind them, I was a wee bit disappointed to learn of the history behind the statues, and found the answer at MisterSF.com. The faceless sculptures are 12 foot high "Corporate Goddesses" by artist Muriel Castanis, and Philip Johnson, the architect of 580 California, commissioned the statues in 1984. Not so sinister after all. Oh well. Jarrett Walker has a funny post about the statues.
