One Year After Heart Surgery
Ray, one week post-op
I can't believe it's been an entire year since Ray had his open-heart surgery to replace one of his heart valves. Seeing him in the I.C.U. for a week was scary, but at least I knew that he was on his way to recovery, unlike many of the other patients there. It was sad to see all these families in the waiting room hearing bad news, and I knew all along that Ray would get to go home soon.
I'm happy to report that Ray has fully recovered from his surgery now and he even started going back to the gym and mountainbiking. You can read more about his thoughts on his anniversary here.
The reason why Ray start blogging was so that he could write about his experiences with heart surgery, and also to talk about music, beer, Giants games, etc. Before I started working for Six Apart, I had told Ray about this really great weblogging service called TypePad. I knew that TypePad had lots of great features and that it would allow Ray to set up a blog in minutes and he could even design it himself.
The best part about using TypePad at the time of Ray's surgery was that I could update his blog every day and let his family and friends know about his condition, and they could leave comments for him. While Ray was out of the I.C.U. but still in the hospital, I would print out all the comments every day and bring them to the hospital and read them to him. Hearing comments from his family and friends meant a lot to him.

I can't imagine what that must have been like, and I'm so happy all is OK. And of course, blogging in such a context is important. For communication AND for a record. It's powerful to have all that documented!

Hi Mie: It was very scary to see what Ray went through with his surgery. But I'm glad that we did try to document the experience as best we as we could. So it's nice for Ray to have something to look back on as time goes by.
